Dr. Carol Somersille strongly believes that El Camino Hospital's greatest strength is that it is one of the few remaining Bay Area hospitals owned and operated by the community it serves, not beholden to corporations or outside groups. As a board member, she pledges to keep the healthcare district's interests rooted in the community. Recognized for her dedication and commitment to patients and families, Dr. Somersille has managed an independent medical practice in our community since the 90s and has spent time in a community clinic providing care for underserved residents. Dr. Somersille's experience as a full-time practicing physician on the hospital staff, with day-to-day knowledge of the hospital operations, will be invaluable to the El Camino Healthcare District Board. As an African-American woman and obstetrician/gynecologist, Dr. Somersille is also committed to social justice issues, including addressing the inequities in healthcare for women and people of color.
Dr. Somersille pledges to spearhead initiatives that improve the quality of preventive care, therefore decreasing the need for hospitalization, as well as initiatives to adapt to the changing needs presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. After many years on a hospital quality assurance committee, she served as Chair of Quality Assurance and currently serves on the El Camino Hospital Perinatal Review Committee. This, in addition to her experience as an elected board member of El Camino Medical Group—an independent physicians group based at El Camino Hospital—attests to her commitment to high-quality healthcare.
As a homeowner in Mountain View since 2001, Dr. Somersille is fully invested in the community and protecting the diverse healthcare needs of its residents.
I live so close to the hospital that I walk to work. My children, who are now adults, attended Benjamin Bubb elementary school in the neighborhood, and my husband is a tenured Professor at Stanford Medical School.
Dr. Somersille is a graduate of Harvard College, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Baylor College of Medicine Obstetrics and Gynecology Internship and Residency. She is a Board Certified Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
El Camino Hospital is clearly one of the best hospitals in California. I am proud to be a member of the medical staff. As your elected board member, I pledge to work tirelessly to ensure our hospital remains controlled by the residents of the district and El Camino Healthcare District remains dedicated to comprehensively addressing our unique community healthcare needs.
