Statement from Carol Ann Somersille, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.
It is an honor to serve on the El Camino Healthcare District Board and as Vice Chairman of the
board. I believe El Camino Hospital’s greatest strength is that it is one of the few remaining
Bay Area hospitals owned and operated by the community it serves, not beholden to
corporations or outside groups. As a board member running for re-election, I pledge to keep
the healthcare district’s interests rooted in our community.
I have over two decades of experience guiding healthcare quality and have managed an
independent medical practice in our community since the 90s. In 2024, I was recognized as a
leader in women’s health by the California State Senate and received a Certificate of
Recognition for “your commitment to providing high quality healthcare and your advocacy for
policy changes for women and children.” My experience as a full-time practicing physician on
the hospital staff, with day-to-day knowledge of hospital operations, has been invaluable to the
El Camino Healthcare District Board.
As Chair of the Quality, Patient Care, and Patient Experience board sub-committee, I
spearheaded initiatives that led to numerous national quality and patient safety awards. As
board liaison to the Community Benefits Committee, I helped devise strategies to distribute
funds to community nonprofit organizations and directed staff to convene those groups in order
to improve care coordination. I pledge to continue fostering improvements in preventive care
and coordination between inpatient and outpatient care, thereby decreasing the need for
hospitalization and readmission.
My legislative advocacy, both locally and in the California State Senate and House of Representatives,
has helped shape healthcare policy. Currently, I am a Santa Clara County Medical Association
Councilor and a California Medical Association District VII Delegate. As such, I am an active
member on the board nominating committee and external affairs committee. Increasingly, I am
focused on expanding access to medical care, limiting scope of practice, and managing the complex
integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in clinical systems and processes.
As a homeowner in Mountain View since 2001, I am fully invested in the community and
protecting the diverse needs of its residents. I live so close to the hospital that I bike to work.
My children, who are now adults, attended Benjamin Bubb elementary school in my
neighborhood.
I am a graduate of Harvard College, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Baylor
College of Medicine Obstetrics and Gynecology Internship and Residency. I am a board
certified Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
El Camino Healthcare District is clearly one of the best healthcare districts in the nation. I am
proud to be a member of the hospital staff. As your elected board member, I pledge to
continue working tirelessly to ensure our hospital remains controlled by the residents of the
district and El Camino Healthcare District remains dedicated to comprehensively addressing
our unique community healthcare needs.
